
17th January 2019: Penang continues to lead nationwide for the Voluntary Smartphone Patrol New Registrants per 100,000 population. Nationwide, total number of VSP membership stands at 1,216,272 whilst tracking of new VSP membership from 25th March 2017 until 17th January 2019 is at 607,832. In terms of absolute number, Penang is at 86,672 behind Selangor’s 128,996 and ahead of Johore at 58,279. Per 100,000 population, Penang has a massive lead of 4,904 versus 2nd placed Negri Sembilan at 3,146 and is over 2.65X the nationwide stats of 1,850. It is noteworthy that Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun has commented in a recent Press release that this VSP mobile phone application has received 60,552 police reports, of which 59,945 cases saw action being taken. He further elaborated that a total of 49,187 complaints have been listed for immediate action, 10,874 under non-immediate action and the remaining 491 pending action. Undoubtedly, the efforts of the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department of Royal Malaysia Police, alongside with various supportive organizations involved in programs to promote this VSP registration has not gone unrewarded. The monitoring of RMP clearly shows that it needs the general public to be its ally in reporting cases meriting Police intervention.
