MCPF Members were invited by Datuk Kamarudin Md Ali (MCPF EXCO Member) in his capacity as the President of British Graduates Association, Malaysia (BGAM) to virtually attend a Merdeka Day Celebration Webinar entitled “Live to Inspire” with its distinguished speaker Yg. Amat Berhormat Tun Haniff Omar. In attendance from MCPF Penang were its Chairman Y.Bhg. Dato’ Seri Syed Jaafar Syed Ali, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Maj. (H) M. Kaleessvaran (SLC Member) and JM Tan (SLC Member cum Timur Laut DLC Chairman). There were up to a total of 134 virtual participants tuning in to listen to the inspiring life story and experiences of Tun Haniff Omar, Malaysia’s youngest ever IGP at age 35 and longest serving IGP (8th June 1974 to 15th January 1994). He was also the 4th BGAM President (1991-2009). His life’s inspirational journey filled with a rich tapestry and kaleidoscope of experiences was simply too vast and enriching to cover the 2.5 hours of enthralling talk. Tun touched on topics as varied as the formation of Malaysia; Indonesian confrontation; going back to school to pursue his Law Degree at the University of Buckingham; being an advocate for fighting against victims of rape, domestic violence and child abuse; growth of corruption in Malaysia; the Tun Salleh Abas episode; resistance to IPCMC; Mokhtar Hashim murder case; decline of National Unity; right actions taken are circumstantially determined e.g. Ops Lallang; being an advocate for ‘Life Long Learning’; honing of managerial skills as an IGP with his many older senior officers and staff. Most interesting for MCPF Members who tuned in were his sharing of his role as a founder of MCPF. Tun also shared some of his guiding beliefs like ‘Police to pursue being prosecutors, not being persecutors’; ‘Talk to people and reason with them’; “I am my father’s son”; priority to fight corruption’, and ‘Doing the right thing, not the popular thing’.
