MCPF Northeast District Liaison Committee Secretary Mr. Peter Paul Arokiyasamy represented MCPF Timur Laut DLC in a “Consensus Program for Intervention and Prevention for student truancy” (“Program permuafakatan intervensi pengegahan murid berisiko cicir”) held at PPD TImur Laut, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, George Town on 4^th December 2024. In attendance were 1. Tuan Mohamad Zawawi bin Ahmad, District Officer, PPD TImur Laut; 2. Encik Fadzil bin Sadikin, Assistant Director, Student Affairs, Penang State Education Office (also MCPF Penang SLC ex-officio [JPNPP]); 3. Encik Mohd Mursalin bin Haji Ramli @ Yusof, Assistant Officer, Student Development Sector, Timur Laut District Education Office (also MCPF Timur Laut DLC Member ex-officio); 4. Mr. Peter Paul Arokiyasamy, Secretary MCPF Timur Laut DLC; 5. MARA Office, Penang; 6. AADK Daerah Timur Laut; 7. Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (Community Welfare Department) Pulau Pinang; 8. Jabatan Tenaga Kerja (Labour Department) Pulau Pinang; 9. Penghulu Kanan (Senior Chiefs); 9. Penghulu Parlimen Bukit Gelugor; 10. Staff of Assistant Director, Student Affairs; and, PPD TImur Laut officers / staff. The main objective of this consensus building program was to align the Timur Laut District Education Office with other NGOs to work together and overcome the truancy of Form 5 students skipping school examinations. This is a directive from the Ministry of Education to District Education Offices to reach out to stakeholders and NGOs to play their respective roles. This is an alignment exercise amongst various Agencies to combat the current truancy concern which as at the current moment is known to be impacting 31 students from Daerah Timur Laut who are avoiding sitting for their SPM exams. The group discussed and had consensus agreement that the main causes of truancy included 1. Family problems; 2. Lack of Enthusiasm; 3. Working; 4. Marriage; 5. Poverty; 6. Chronic Illness: 7. Difficult to go to school; and, 8. Fear of going to school.
