PETALING JAYA: As its new chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has started several new initiatives for the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF), said the foundation’s senior vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

“She is the first woman to head the foundation as chairman and she is particularly passionate about cybersecurity.

“This includes cyberbullying which many youths have become victims,” he said.

Dr Wan Azizah’s appointment as chairman had taken effect on Feb 1 this year, replacing former Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“The decision was made in accordance with the MCPF constitution which states that the chairman must be a Cabinet minister,” he said.

He added that the foundation’s patron, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad appoints the chairman.

Lee said Dr Wan Azizah has started bringing in changes to the foundation and set up several committees to look into crime prevention in cybersecurity, youth, family and children, and also spearhead the safe city initiative.

Separately, Lee, who is also National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chairman, said designated buildings yet to obtain the Fire Certificates (FC) need to do so by year end.

It was reported about 140 out of 650 government buildings nationwide have yet to be issued FC, and 39 of those buildings are located in Putrajaya.

“I hope that the affected buildings will act on their own initiative and lead by example in the interest of safety to apply for the FC as directed by the Fire and Rescue Department,” he said.
